Main Character Stays: 8 Wonderfully Weird and Romantic Places to Stay in Vienna, Austria

Vienna is a city that demands drama.

This is a place where empires rose and fell. So, naturally, I think your hotel should get in on the action.

Forget anonymous rooms with sensible beige furniture. What if you could run away with the circus, spend the night in a former 19th-century workshop, or check into a hotel with its very own ghostly French bulldog?

I've found eight atmospheric Vienna accommodations for travelers who want their vacation to feel like the beginning of a very good story.

Some are surprisingly affordable. Others require a champagne budget.

All come with serious main-character potential.

Roses, rooftops, and a little Beethoven-inspired romance in Vienna.

1. Hotel Sacher Vienna: For Your Haunted Heiress Era

Your character: A wealthy widow with impeccable taste, a scandalous past, and a French bulldog who refuses to behave.

The vibe: Imperial Vienna glamour, extravagant luxury, chocolate cake, and a little supernatural mischief.

If you're going to spend a small fortune pretending to be European aristocracy, you might as well do it somewhere with a fabulous history (and a possible ghost dog).

Opened in 1876, Hotel Sacher became one of Vienna's most glamorous addresses under Anna Sacher, a widow famous for smoking cigars, entertaining high society, and breeding French bulldogs.

According to the hotel's ghostly folklore, at least one French bulldog still haunts the premises, and if you’re lucky, it might jump into your lap…

Today, the Sacher offers sumptuous rooms, historic elegance, and the opportunity to eat its famous chocolate cake. Which might be reason enough to stay.

I introduced this gently spooky stay in my Salzburg Main Character Stays. For more spooky Viennese storytelling, you can watch my Haunted Vienna episode on YouTube.

Best for: Luxury lovers, romantic splurges, opera enthusiasts, and travelers who appreciate a good ghost story with dessert.

Before booking: This is a five-star luxury splurge beside the Vienna State Opera.

2. 25hours Hotel Vienna: For Your Runaway Circus Performer Era

Your character: A glamorous trapeze artist who has fled the circus after a disastrous affair with the ringmaster and is currently reinventing herself in Vienna.

The vibe: Theatrical interiors, vintage carnival fantasy, rooftop cocktails, and bathtubs with an audience of rooftops.

This is not your average, stuffy Viennese hotel.

The 25hours Hotel at MuseumsQuartier goes gloriously overboard with its circus theme. Think fantastical wallpaper, clowns, acrobats, elephants, vintage oddities, and the impression that you might wake up to discover you've accidentally joined a traveling carnival.

But the real prize?

Certain Extra Large rooms have freestanding bathtubs on private balconies overlooking the city. Yes! You can enjoy a luxurious soak outdoors above Vienna while contemplating your next dramatic career move.

There's also a rooftop bar, Der Dachboden, where your mysterious circus heroine can enjoy a cocktail while surveying her new kingdom.

Best for: Creative couples, design lovers, playful travelers, and anyone who finds conventional luxury a bit dull.

Before booking: The outdoor bathtubs are exclusive to the Extra Large category and aren't operational during winter. The hotel is near MuseumsQuartier, an excellent sightseeing base.

3. Hotel Daniel Vienna: For Your Glamorous Nomad Era

Your character: A restless divorcee who has just launched her adult children, now traveling Europe in a vintage trailer without sacrificing decent plumbing.

The vibe: Midcentury design, eccentric urban glamping, unconventional luxury, and a rebellious streak.

I love a hotel with a weird little secret in the backyard.

Hotel Daniel has 116 conventional rooms, and one vintage trailer parked in the garden.

Naturally, we're here for the trailer.

It's a refurbished 1952 Silver Streak Clipper, transformed into a tiny luxury hideaway with a proper bed, heating, air-conditioning, and a freestanding bathtub.

Best for: Adventurous couples, design enthusiasts, and travelers who want a genuinely unusual sleeping arrangement.

Before booking: You must specifically reserve the Trailer, not a standard Daniel room. It's close to Belvedere Palace and Vienna's main train station, making it convenient for travelers arriving by rail.

4. grätzlhotel Vienna: For Your Secret Life as a Viennese Shopkeeper Era

Your character: A mysterious stranger who has inherited a tiny Vienna storefront, along with a collection of peculiar keys that might be haunted.

The vibe: Neighborhood charm, converted shops, clever design, and a little Wes Anderson energy.

What if your hotel room used to be a button shop?

Or a locksmith's workshop? Or a confectioner's?

That's the delightful idea behind grätzlhotel, which transforms former neighborhood businesses into distinctive guest suites scattered around Vienna. You get your own little slice of the city, complete with design details inspired by the shop's former life.

You're not just visiting Vienna. You're stepping back in time to cosplay as a player in Viennese history.

Best for: Independent travelers, couples, neighborhood explorers, and anyone who enjoys quirky accommodations with local character.

Before booking: Suites are scattered across several districts, including Karmelitermarkt, Belvedere, Schönbrunn, and Servitenviertel. Choose the location carefully. Check-in is self-service, and there is no traditional hotel reception.

5. Hotel Orient Vienna: For Your Scandalous Secret Affair Era

Your character: A respectable nineteenth-century aristocrat who has arranged a rendezvous with someone she absolutely should not be seeing unchaperoned.

The vibe: Red velvet, enormous bathtubs, baroque fantasy, and a disregard for respectable behavior.

Oh, Vienna.

Just when I think I've found your most outrageous accommodation, you produce a hotel dedicated to illicit romance.

Hotel Orient is a traditional Stundenhotel, which means rooms can be rented by the hour.

Yep, you read that right! Among its twenty themed rooms, you'll find the extravagant Kaiser Suite, complete with a canopy bed, rich red furnishings, baroque mirrors, and an enormous bathtub. There are also rooms inspired by exotic fantasies, including one called 1001 Nights, and another named Engerl & Bengerl—Angel and Rascal.

The hotel even encourages guests to use pseudonyms.

It sounds absurd, theatrical, sexy, and completely unforgettable.

Best for: Adventurous couples, romantic escapades, and travelers who appreciate an outrageous fantasy.

Before booking: This is not a conventional hotel. Overnight stays currently run from 10 p.m. to noon, generally on weekends and holidays, with weekdays available by request. Reservations are by telephone, and you should confirm current rates and your preferred themed room directly.

6. Hotel am Brillantengrund: For Your Retro Indie-Film Era

Your character: A charmingly disorganized artist who has arrived in Vienna to find herself, accidentally fallen in love with a neighborhood, and now refuses to leave.

The vibe: Vintage furniture, courtyard palm trees, Filipino food, and an offbeat European summer.

This one feels like stepping into an independent movie where everyone knows an interesting musician and love arrives unexpectedly over breakfast.

Hotel am Brillantengrund is a family-run hideaway in Vienna's creative seventh district, filled with vintage furnishings and treasures from the 1950s onward. You get individual rooms with personality, a charming courtyard, palm trees, and a restaurant serving Filipino cuisine.

There's something lovely about the whole arrangement. It seems lived-in, creative, and, unlike several entries on this list, it won’t require selling a kidney to spend the night.

Best for: Creative travelers, couples, vintage enthusiasts, and visitors looking for character without a five-star price tag.

Before booking: Rooms vary in size and style, and the hotel also offers suites and apartments. Published starting rates are relatively accessible by Vienna standards, but check your actual dates.

7. magdas HOTEL Vienna City: For Your Reformed Convent-Girl Era

Your character: An empath retreating to the quiet corners of Vienna to recover from a terrible romance…and possibly have another one.

The vibe: Midcentury religious architecture, creative upcycling, a rooftop chapel, and a colorful second life.

A former priests' residence gets a colorful second life as magdas HOTEL Vienna City, where creative design and a social mission bring fresh energy to a building with an unusual past. Photo: Herzi Pinki / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.

I have a soft spot for buildings that have lived several lives.

magdas HOTEL Vienna City occupies a former priests' residence from the 1960s, complete with a chapel on the sixth floor.

Rather than demolish the building's history, its designers incorporated it into a stylish hotel filled with repurposed furniture, artwork, and distinctive architectural details.

And the hotel's social mission is every bit as interesting as its architecture, creating employment opportunities for people with refugee backgrounds.

Best for: Thoughtful travelers, architecture enthusiasts, writers, and people who appreciate interesting design with a social purpose.

Before booking: The hotel is in the third district, convenient for Stadtpark and Belvedere. The historic chapel survives and is used for events, but don't assume it's freely accessible to overnight guests.

8. Eurostars Josefine: For Your Jazz-Age Femme Fatale Era

Your character: A sophisticated international spy who has checked into Vienna under an assumed name and is waiting for a dangerously handsome stranger at the bar.

The vibe: Art Deco glamour, surrealist flourishes, velvet, green marble, and cocktails strong enough to inspire regrettable decisions.

Vienna's imperial palaces might make you feel like an empress, but the Josefine makes you feel like a woman with secrets.

The hotel's interiors transport guests into the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s, complete with atmospheric lighting, rich finishes, and a distinctly cinematic mood.

And downstairs? Barfly's Club.

This legendary Viennese cocktail bar first opened in 1990 and later found a glamorous new home here, surrounded by mirrors, brass, velvet, and green marble.

Naturally, the handsome stranger at the next table knows far more than he's letting on.

And naturally, he's trouble. (Fun trouble.)

Best for: Romantic couples, cocktail enthusiasts, Art Deco lovers, and aspiring international women of mystery.

Before booking: The hotel is in the sixth district, near Mariahilfer Straße. It's currently branded Eurostars Josefine. The entrance requires stairs and is not accessible to guests with some mobility limitations.

So, Which Vienna Main Character Are You?

Playing the main character at the Greenhouse Bar in Vienna's Mozart Garden. Naturally, a portrait was required.

I'm genuinely torn.

Hotel Sacher appeals to my love of history, luxury, and eccentric women who refuse to be forgotten. (Also, ghost dogs. Yes, please.)

But the outdoor bathtub at 25hours? The gloriously scandalous rooms at Hotel Orient? Those are the kinds of experiences I'd remember long after forgetting what the breakfast buffet looked like.

And I love that places like grätzlhotel and Brillantengrund offer opportunities to romanticize your life without spending a fortune. That’s the beauty of Main Character Stays. You don't have to be rich, famous, or secretly descended from European royalty to have an extraordinary travel experience.

You just need to remember that you’re the main character of your life.

And you deserve a damned good story
