Some vacations, you just need a place to crash.
And then there are vacations where you get to wake up in a castle, wander down a grand staircase in your imaginary ball gown, and briefly entertain the possibility that you've been a tragically misunderstood aristocrat all along.
I think we need more of the second kind.
Salzburg looking like something straight out of a fairytale, with its magnificent churches, historic rooftops, and imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress rising above the Old Town. The perfect backdrop for your main-character moment.
Don't get me wrong. I'm happy staying somewhere practical when the occasion calls for it. I've slept in plenty of perfectly adequate hotel rooms, hostels, and apartments where the main attraction was a comfortable bed and a reasonable price.
But sometimes I want more.
I want atmosphere. History. A building with secrets. A place that makes me feel like I've stepped into a story instead of checking into another hotel.
Salzburg, Austria, is made for this kind of travel.
Between the medieval streets, magnificent churches, wooded hills, Baroque palaces, and dramatic mountain backdrop, Salzburg already looks like the setting for several different kinds of fiction.
You could be the heroine of a romantic historical drama, an eccentric artist hiding out in an old European townhouse, or a mysterious woman arriving at a castle with an inheritance and questions about her family's dark past.
Hell, why not all three?
1. Schloss Leopoldskron: For Your Fairytale Heiress Era
Your character: The long-lost heiress returning to her family's Austrian estate.
The vibe: Lakeside palace, sweeping romance, mysterious family portraits, and an excellent possibility of falling in love with someone unsuitable.
If your main-character fantasy involves waking up in a lakeside palace with a sweeping staircase and centuries of history, Salzburg's Schloss Leopoldskron might be your dream come true. Original photo: Simon1976 / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0. Digitally enhanced adaptation.
If you've ever wanted to live inside a European period drama, Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is a compelling place to start.
This beautiful Rococo palace sits beside a lake, with the Austrian mountains looming in the wings.
And this palace? She has stories to tell…
Before the Nazis seized the property in 1938, Leopoldskron belonged to theater director Max Reinhardt, one of the founders of the Salzburg Festival. It also became internationally recognizable through The Sound of Music, which used the lakeside property for filming. (And tell me theater director Max Reinhardt wasn't at least a little inspiration for The Sound of Music's fabulously theatrical Uncle Max. I mean, come on…)
Oh, and there are reports of ghostly parties still taking place here on the regular, so, um…what exactly are you waiting for? Check out my Haunted Salzburg Folktales episode on YouTube for all the dirt on who's haunting what—and where.
You bet I'd book a stay here.
But there's one important caveat before you trot over to their website: Schloss Leopoldskron offers luxurious suites inside the historic palace as well as contemporary guest rooms in the adjacent Meierhof building.
Both give you access to the drama, but if your fantasy involves sleeping inside the palace, pay attention to which building you're booking.
Personally, I'd be tempted to splurge on the palace for a special occasion.
Best for: Romantic getaways, Sound of Music fans, history lovers, ghost-story enthusiasts, and anyone who has ever wanted to announce that they'll be taking breakfast in the drawing room.
Before booking: The palace is outside Salzburg's busiest center, so plan your transportation accordingly.
2. Hotel Goldgasse: For Your Mysterious Leading-Lady Era
Your character: The glamorous, mysterious woman who arrives in Salzburg for the opera dressed all in black and isn't telling anyone why.
The vibe: Old European townhouse meets backstage theatrical glamour.

This is a hotel that understands the main character assignment.
Hotel Goldgasse sits in a townhouse in Salzburg's Old Town, with 16 individually designed rooms and suites that take inspiration from legendary Salzburg Festival performances.
Large-scale photographs by festival photographer Luigi Caputo bring theatrical moments to life throughout the hotel.
Oh, the drama! LOVE.
And because it's tucked into the historic center, you can spend your evening exploring Salzburg's atmospheric streets before returning home to your own theatrical hideaway.
Best for: Theater lovers, creative travelers, couples, and anyone who loves a hotel with a distinctive personality.
Before booking: You're in the Old Town, so expect some tourist activity around the neighborhood.
3. Johannes Schlössl: For Your Reclusive Scholar Era
Your character: The mysterious scholar who has disappeared into the hills above Salzburg to write a book, uncover a dark family secret, or recover from a brush with existential angst.
The vibe: Historic religious retreat, peaceful gardens, long walks, and no interest in checking your email.

Not every main-character fantasy requires a palace.
Sometimes the fantasy is simply retreating to a beautiful place and being left alone.
Johannes Schlössl is a guesthouse operated by the Pallottiner religious community on Mönchsberg, the wooded ridge overlooking the city. But you don't have to be religious to stay here. The property welcomes ordinary travelers as well as guests seeking spiritual reflection.
The rooms are more straightforward than those in Salzburg's luxury hotels, but the setting is the attraction: gardens, trees, quiet spaces, and the sense of being removed from the world below.
It sounds like the ideal setting for an eccentric author working on her masterpiece.
(Or avoiding her responsibilities. Maybe both.)
Best for: Solo travelers, writers, contemplative travelers, and anyone who values peace over luxury.
Before booking: This is a religious guesthouse, not a conventional boutique hotel. Expect a quieter atmosphere and check the property's practical arrangements. The Mönchsberg location also means understanding the walking routes and lift access.
4. Hotel Schloss Mönchstein: For Your Gothic Romance Era
Your character: The heroine who receives an invitation to stay at an old castle and discovers that its devastatingly handsome owner has a complicated past and wants to ply her with schnitzel and wine.
The vibe: Castle walls, old secrets, romantic isolation, and luxury with just enough drama.
A castle hotel perched above Salzburg? Yes, please. Schloss Mönchstein offers the perfect backdrop for a little Gothic romance fantasy, preferably with a mysterious stranger and a glass of Austrian wine. If Schloss Leopoldskron is a grand, glittering fairytale, Hotel Schloss Mönchstein is where I'd set a slightly darker romance.
High above Salzburg on Mönchsberg, this property has roots stretching back to the 14th century.
Today, it's a luxury castle hotel surrounded by private grounds, with sweeping views, and a VIBE I caught even from photographs.
I want to sleep over, commune with the spirits, and meet that handsome, complicated hero interested in plying me with schnitzel…
Best for: Romantic celebrations, luxury travelers, castle enthusiasts, and lovers of atmospheric historical fiction.
Before booking: This is firmly in splurge territory. The hilltop location is part of its appeal, but be sure to understand how you'll travel between the hotel and the city.
5. Arthotel Blaue Gans: For Your Bohemian Artist Era
Your character: The unconventional artist living in an old European city, falling in love with a musician, and refusing to behave sensibly.
The vibe: Centuries-old inn meets modern art, eccentricity, and excellent taste.
Generic building in Salzburg because the Arthotel’s image use policy confused me. But it looks cool! Click the link and check it out for yourself.
The Arthotel Blaue Gans has one of the most interesting histories of any hotel on this list.
The property traces its origins to 1350 and is regarded as Salzburg's oldest inn.
Sigh…it already sounds like the beginning of a novel.
But what makes the Blaue Gans super appealing is the way it combines history with contemporary art and design.
I would paint watercolors here and write you an angsty letter about how much I missed you. (Yes, I would include a lock of my hair…)
Best for: Artists, design lovers, history enthusiasts, and travelers who prefer interesting over conventional.
Before booking: The hotel is on Getreidegasse, one of Salzburg's famous historic streets.
6. Hotel Sacher Salzburg: For Your Grand European Romance Era
Your character: The impeccably dressed heroine of a glamorous European romance who always orders dessert and never worries about the bill.
The vibe: Champagne, chandeliers, beautiful river views, and old-fashioned luxury.
Old-world glamour on the banks of the Salzach River. Hotel Sacher Salzburg is made for travelers who appreciate grand European hotels, romantic views, and a little chocolate cake with their history. Original photo: Andreas Praefcke / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 3.0. Digitally enhanced adaptation.
There are some hotels where you know exactly what sort of fantasy you're buying into.
Hotel Sacher Salzburg is one of them.
Opened in 1866 as the Österreichischer Hof, this historic grand hotel occupies a beautiful patch of land beside the Salzach River.
It became part of the Sacher hotel family in the late 20th century and took its current name in 2000.
Today, it offers elegant rooms and suites, fine dining, and views across the river toward Salzburg's Old Town and fortress. And yes, there's also the famous Sacher-Torte connection. (Though I’m not sure if this hotel is as haunted as it’s Vienna cousin… Listen to my Haunted Vienna Youtube episode, including the story of the ghost French bulldogs at Hotel Sacher Vienna here.)
As someone who firmly believes that eating local desserts is an essential form of cultural research, I appreciate a hotel where chocolate cake comes with this much history.
This is where I'd stay if I wanted to dress up for dinner, linger over breakfast, and pretend I'd arrived in Salzburg during the golden age of European grand hotels.
Best for: Classic luxury lovers, romantics, special occasions, and travelers who enjoy a little old-world glamour.
Before booking: Not every room has the same river or Old Town views. Check the exact room category before paying extra for the experience.
7. Hotel Stein: For Your Glamorous Spy Era
Your character: The glamorous international who arrives in Salzburg carrying one suitcase, a mysterious passport, and several secrets.
The vibe: Sophisticated rooftop cocktails, contemporary luxury, and a European city spread out beneath you.
Not everyone wants their main-character moment to take place in the 18th century. Some of us would prefer a stylish European thriller. Hotel Stein might be the answer.
The building has medieval roots, but a contemporary personality. And then there's the rooftop terrace.
Perched above the Salzach River, the hotel's Steinterrasse offers panoramic views across Salzburg's rooftops. This is the kind of place where you might meet a handsome stranger at the next table. Perhaps he's also an international art thief looking for an accomplice!
That's between you and your travel insurance.
Best for: Couples, design-conscious travelers, modern romantics, and anyone who loves a rooftop view.
Before booking: Hotel Stein is an adults-only property admitting guests aged 16 and older. It's also centrally located, so this is more of a glamorous city stay than a secluded retreat.
8. Hôtel Bristol Salzburg: For Your Old-World Socialite Era
Your character: The wealthy, slightly scandalous socialite who has come to Salzburg for the festival season and is on the cutting edge of fun and trouble.
The vibe: Velvet armchairs, grand European traditions, theatrical history, and elegant people behaving badly.
With its elegant historic façade and a location near Salzburg's theaters and Mirabell Gardens, Hôtel Bristol is practically begging you to dress up and make a dramatic entrance. Original photo: Leonhard Lenz / Wikimedia Commons, CC0. Digitally enhanced adaptation.
Here's another hotel with some genuine stories behind it.
The building that houses Hôtel Bristol Salzburg has roots dating to the early 17th century. It served as a residence for noble families before eventually becoming a hotel in the late 19th century.
And here's a juicy detail : when it opened as a hotel in 1892, it was known as the Electric Hotel because it was the first hotel in Salzburg to have electric power.
Imagine how glamorous that must have seemed at the time…
And you’re so close to the theater here and ALL the drama!
Best for: Old-world romantics, theater lovers, luxury travelers, and anyone who wants to feel like a glamorous regular at the Salzburg Festival.
Before booking: This is another luxury choice, although the central location is especially convenient for exploring on foot.
Which Salzburg Main Character Stay Would I Choose?
Salzburg is especially magical at night…
Good question! That depends on the story I wanted to live.
If money were no object, and I wanted the grandest possible European fairytale, Schloss Leopoldskron would be difficult to resist.
If I wanted an atmospheric hideaway where I could wander through the woods, write, read, and avoid other people, I'd be tempted by Johannes Schlössl. (Though to be completely honest, I’d probably choose a more affordable city to retreat. When I go deep into a book, I barely have time to breathe, let alone explore, and the price tag associated with being so close to Salzburg would be wasted.)
If I wanted a romantic, slightly Gothic castle experience, Hotel Schloss Mönchstein would probably win. (Gah, that sounds fun!)
But for a city break that combines location, interesting history, and a genuinely distinctive place to sleep, I'd be most drawn to Hotel Goldgasse or the Blaue Gans.

Sometimes Where You Stay Is Part of the Adventure
As a storyteller by trade, I've always loved traveling to places that help you embrace the main character energy.
Castles, old cities, historic buildings, dramatic landscapes—there's something about stepping into places where generations of people have lived, loved, created, struggled, and dreamed that’s so perfectly dramatic. Add in places to get gorgeous (or delightfully odd) photos, and I’m sold.
The older I get, the more I appreciate experiences that make me feel connected to that sense of possibility.
I don't need to pretend I'm somebody else. But sometimes it's lovely to step outside the routines of my everyday life and remember that there are still so many adventures waiting to be had.
Maybe yours involves a palace. Or a quiet room above an old city. Or a cocktail on a rooftop while the sun sets over the mountains.
Whatever the story, let’s make room for more play, more whimsy, and more magic.
After all, you ARE the main character in your own life.
You might as well book a stay that celebrates your story.
Walking the ancient palace walls in Albania as the sun began to set, fully convinced I was on an epic quest to save Middle-earth. No sign of Gandalf yet, but the main-character energy was STRONG.
