Oh, Werfen. Why aren’t more people talking about how cute you are?!
Because you are the cutest, and I really wish I’d had more than one afternoon to spend in your delightful little self.
The magnificent Hohenwerfen Fortress watches over the tiny Austrian town of Werfen, with the dramatic limestone peaks of the Alps rising behind it.
We took the train from Salzburg to this tiny Austrian town because I wanted to hike up to the meadow where Julie Andrews filmed part of "Do-Re-Mi" for The Sound of Music. I knew there was a dramatic medieval fortress nearby, and that was about it.
We were mostly there for the meadow.
What I didn’t anticipate was how much I'd like Werfen itself.
It's a lovely little hamlet surrounded by spectacular Alpine scenery, with a castle looming over it, and the sort of peaceful, small-town atmosphere that makes you wonder whether you've been spending too much time in cities.
The people at the tourist information center were lovely. Even our mundane stops at the grocery store for snacks and the town hall toilet left me feeling fond of the place. (And yes, I'm mentioning the public toilet because a clean, convenient bathroom is a genuine travel amenity.)
By the time we headed back to Salzburg, I was already thinking that I'd happily return and spend a night.
Now, after researching what else there is to do around Werfen, I think that's a great idea!
Here's how to get from Salzburg to Werfen by train, how to reach the fortress and ice caves without a rental car, and how I'd organize a visit depending on how much time you have.
Is Werfen Worth Visiting from Salzburg?
Colorful traditional buildings, flower-filled windows, and a medieval fortress on the hill above. Werfen is the sort of picturesque Austrian town that makes you wish you'd planned to stay longer.
Absolutely, particularly if you enjoy Alpine scenery, historic castles, hiking, or slightly unusual attractions.
Werfen sits in Austria's Salzach Valley, approximately 40 kilometers south of Salzburg. It's close enough for a day trip, but there’s considerably more to do here than you might expect from such a small place.
The three headline attractions are:
Hohenwerfen Fortress: A dramatic medieval castle perched high above town, with historic exhibits, guided tours, and birds-of-prey demonstrations.
Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves: A vast natural limestone cave system containing spectacular ice formations, reached using a mountain shuttle, cable car, and walking paths.
The Sound of Music Trail: A hillside hike to the meadow where scenes from the famous "Do-Re-Mi" sequence were filmed.
And then there's Werfen itself: a historic market town with mountain views, traditional buildings, and a much quieter feel than Salzburg.
If you're traveling on a tight schedule, choose one major attraction and make it a day trip. But if you have time and you're traveling relatively light, I think spending a night here would be a wonderful way to experience more of the area without rushing.
How to Get from Salzburg to Werfen by Train
The good news is that getting to Werfen without a car is easy.
Trains depart from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof (Salzburg Hbf), the city's main railway station, and travel south through the Salzach Valley toward Werfen.
The castle's official website describes direct ÖBB and S-Bahn services, with trains approximately every 30 minutes and a journey of around 45 minutes. Exact departure times depend on the service and date.
You’ll want to get off at Werfen Bahnhof, not Werfenweng, which is a different village.
The train ride is scenic, with mountains rising around the valley as you head south. And arriving by train puts you within walking distance of the town center and, with a bit more effort, the fortress.
Buying Your Train Tickets
The gorgeous Alpine views on the way to Werfen.
You can search for journeys using the official ÖBB website or the ÖBB app.
Enter:
From: Salzburg Hbf
To: Werfen
Choose your travel date and preferred departure time.
Check the terms of your ticket carefully, particularly if you are using a regional fare, day pass, or discounted ticket.
We had a frustrating experience with our ticket on this journey and ended up being charged an additional €11. It wasn't a particularly expensive mistake in the grand scheme of international travel, but it was annoying and entirely avoidable with clearer information.
My advice is to check that the ticket you buy covers the actual train you intend to board, rather than assuming that any Salzburg-to-Werfen departure will qualify.
I'd also download the ticket or make sure it's accessible offline before boarding.
Getting Around Werfen Without a Car
This is where planning matters. Although Werfen itself is small, its three major attractions aren't conveniently clustered together. And they're certainly not all at the same elevation.
The fortress is above town, the Sound of Music meadow requires a hillside hike, and the ice caves involve a mountain transfer, cable car, and additional walking.
| Attraction | Getting There Without a Car | Time to Allow |
|---|---|---|
| Hohenwerfen Fortress | Walk from the station or arrange a castle shuttle | Around 3 hours |
| Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves | Shuttle from Werfen, cable car, and walking paths | At least 4–5 hours |
| Sound of Music Meadow | Walk uphill on the marked trail from town | Around 2–3 hours round trip |
Times are planning estimates, including access and visits, not guaranteed door-to-door durations. Weather, fitness, transport connections, and attraction queues can all affect your experience.
Visiting Hohenwerfen Fortress
Even the train station in Werfen comes with spectacular views! Towering limestone peaks rise above the railway platform, offering a dramatic Alpine welcome before you've even started exploring.
Even if you don't visit Hohenwerfen Fortress, you certainly won't miss seeing it.
The castle sits on a rocky prominence high above the valley, looking exactly like the sort of place a medieval ruler would build if he wanted everyone for miles around to know who was in charge.
Originally built in the 11th century, Hohenwerfen has served various military and administrative purposes over its long history. Today it's a visitor attraction with guided tours, historic exhibits, and falconry demonstrations.
I didn't make it inside on our visit, but it is high on my list for a return trip.
How to Reach Hohenwerfen Castle from Werfen Station
According to the fortress's official website, you can walk from the train station in approximately 30 minutes.
Alternatively, you can arrange a shuttle by calling +43 664 1266700, ideally around an hour before arrival.
From the lower castle entrance, you can continue on foot or use the inclined lift to reach the fortress.
The castle's interior is accessible only by guided tour, so check the tour times before planning your day. If you'd like to see the birds-of-prey demonstration, coordinate your visit around that schedule too.
For current admission prices and schedules, see the official Hohenwerfen Fortress website.
Visiting Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves Without a Car

Of everything we missed on our first Werfen trip, the Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves might be the attraction I'm most eager to go back for. (I love a cave… I really do.)
First, the scale of this place sounds epic.
Eisriesenwelt is famous as the world's largest ice cave, extending through a vast network of limestone passages. Visitors explore the ice-filled portion of the cave on guided tours, climbing stairways past enormous frozen formations inside the mountain. (What?! How awesome does that sound?)
But it also requires more planning than hopping off a train and walking up to a meadow on a sunny day.
The Journey to the Ice Caves
We didn't make it to the ice caves on our visit, but I've researched the route for a future trip. Here's how I'd tackle it using public transportation, based on the official 2026 visitor information.
1. Take the train to Werfen
Travel from Salzburg Hbf to Werfen Bahnhof using the regional services described above.
2. Catch the ice cave shuttle
The 2026 timetable lists departures directly from Werfen station at 8:26, 10:26, 12:26, and 14:26. Additional departures run approximately every 25 minutes from the Gries parking-area stop, about five minutes' walk away. The listed adult round-trip fare is €11.
3. Walk to the cable car
From the mountain visitor center, allow approximately 20 minutes uphill to reach the lower cable car station.
4. Ride the cable car
The ride takes roughly 3 minutes, but it doesn't deliver you directly to the cave entrance.
5. Walk to the cave entrance
Allow another 20 minutes uphill from the upper cable car station. The guided cave tour lasts approximately 70 minutes and involves around 1,400 steps, including 700 going up.
My planning advice: Coordinate your train arrival with the shuttle timetable, particularly if you've booked a timed cave visit. Missing a convenient departure could mean a frustrating wait.
Important: This is a physically demanding excursion, even with the cable car. Consider the uphill walking and substantial stair climbing if you have knee problems or mobility limitations. The temperature inside the cave stays around freezing, even in summer. So, bring a warm jacket, sturdy footwear, and ideally gloves and a hat.
Times and fares reflect published 2026 information and may change. Check the official Eisriesenwelt website for current schedules and visitor information before traveling.
Hiking the Sound of Music Trail in Werfen
The adventure begins! My son tackles the uphill trail to the Sound of Music meadow in Werfen
This is the part of Werfen we visited, and the reason we came in the first place.
If you've watched The Sound of Music approximately a billion times, as I have, you'll recognize the Alpine meadow where Maria and the children sing and picnic during the "Do-Re-Mi" sequence.
The filming location is above Werfen at Gschwandtanger, and you can hike to it using the town's designated Sound of Music Trail.
The tourist office has information about the route, which follows a path uphill from Werfen and takes approximately an hour in each direction, depending on your pace. The signs for the trail were well-posted and easy to follow, and the view from the top was incredible!
We were giddy with joy and, obviously, had to have a spin…
Living our best Sound of Music, spinning-in-the-meadow lives.
We made this hike during our Salzburg visit in late September, and it was warm enough to wish I’d worn a tank top. Definitely check the weather before leaving your hotel and layer appropriately.
Don't Skip Werfen Itself
Aw, Werfen! It was so cute. I genuinely liked this little town.
Werfen is small, so you're not going to fill an entire afternoon shopping or exploring museums here, but it has charm.
We stopped into the tourist information center, where everyone was friendly and helpful, popped into the local grocery store, and spent a little time getting acquainted with the town before and after our hike.
All those ordinary experiences added up to a very positive impression. It seemed like a good place to live and be a human.
There's something refreshing about a place that doesn't seem to exist for tourists, even though it happens to have several major attractions on its doorstep.
Can You Visit the Fortress and Ice Caves in One Day?
Lovely wildflowers on the hills above Werfen. (The hills were definitely alive…)
Technically, both attractions could fit into a long day if schedules align. But would I recommend it?
No.
The ice caves alone involve the train, shuttle, two uphill walks, a cable car, and a guided tour that lasts over an hour. You then need to reverse much of that journey afterward.
The fortress has its own access arrangements, tour schedule, and falconry demonstrations.
Trying to coordinate both from Salzburg on public transportation could mean spending an awful lot of your day watching the clock.
I'd rather enjoy one properly than rush through two.
Option 1: Full-Day Fortress and Meadow Adventure.
Take a morning train from Salzburg, visit the fortress, have lunch, hike to the meadow, and leave some time to explore the town before returning.
This would be my recommendation for travelers who enjoy history and hiking but don't want a crazy strenuous day.
Option 2: Adventure Day — Eisriesenwelt Ice Caves
The train to Werfen, an easy hop, skip, and a jump from Salzburg.
Leave Salzburg early and devote most of the day to the ice caves.
Book your entry in advance, coordinate the train with the shuttle departure, and allow plenty of time for the walking portions.
If everything goes smoothly, you may still have time to enjoy Werfen or the meadow afterward. (If you’re also a beast in beastly good shape…)
Option 3: Spend One Night in Werfen and Do More
This is the option I'd seriously consider if I were returning.
Take the train from Salzburg with an overnight bag, spend the afternoon exploring the fortress, meadow, and the town, and stay at a local guesthouse or small hotel.
The following morning, visit the ice caves before returning to Salzburg or continuing your travels.
I wouldn't necessarily haul two large suitcases here just to stay one night, but traveling light? Absolutely.
Cute Stays for a Cute Town: Where to Stay in Werfen
If I make it back to Werfen (and I certainly hope to!), I'd love to spend a night soaking up the small-town atmosphere and enjoying those spectacular mountain views. Here are three places that caught my eye while researching a return visit.
Central-Inn Werfen
My pick for travelers arriving by train. This spacious apartment sits right in Werfen's historic center, close to shops and restaurants, with a kitchen and mountain views. A lovely option for settling in and exploring on foot.
View Central-Inn Werfen on Booking.com →Reitsamerhof – Zimmer & Apartments
For a traditional Austrian country stay, this guesthouse offers cozy rooms and apartments, mountain or garden views, and breakfast options. It's near Pfarrwerfen railway station, making it worth considering even without a rental car.
View Reitsamerhof on Booking.com →Haus Biechl mit Blick auf die Burg Hohenwerfen
And for something especially picturesque, how about an apartment with views of Hohenwerfen Fortress? This countryside property near Werfen looks like a wonderful place to slow down and enjoy the Alpine scenery. I'd investigate transportation options before booking without a car.
View Haus Biechl on Booking.com →My tip: If you're visiting by train, I'd prioritize staying in Werfen's center or near a railway station. If you have a car, the surrounding countryside opens up some lovely possibilities.
So… Is Werfen Worth the Trip from Salzburg?
Me, on the train back to Salzburg, already pining for more Werfen adventure.
I think so. And I've only experienced a fraction of what it has to offer.
We went for a movie location, climbed a hillside, admired the scenery, met some kind people, and came away with a surprisingly strong affection for a little town we hadn't given much thought to before arriving.
Now I want to go back for the fortress and especially the ice caves.
Werfen is easy enough to reach from Salzburg that you can choose a single attraction and return the same day. But there's also enough here to justify slowing down and spending the night.
That's what I'd do next time.
Because every once in a while, the little town you thought was just a convenient stop turns out to be a destination in its own right.
Still planning your Salzburg adventure?
Werfen is only one of the reasons I fell so hard for this corner of Austria! If you're putting together your own trip, don't miss my Salzburg itinerary, packed with gorgeous scenery, fascinating sights, and ideas for making the most of your time in the city.
And if you're a fellow Sound of Music obsessive, you'll definitely want to read my guide to the new Sound of Music Museum at Hellbrunn Palace. It's another delightful stop for fans of the film, and there's plenty more to explore while you're there.
